Abstract:

This working panel constitutes a space for critical reflection and academic exchange aimed at examining the structural transformations that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is bringing about in two fundamental areas of contemporary social sciences: university education and journalistic practice.

The academic relevance of this panel lies in its contribution to the development of a critical, contextualized, and situated understanding of how GenAI is transforming the Latin American communicational and educational ecosystem. Unlike other regions of the world, where technological infrastructure and regulatory frameworks present different characteristics, Latin America faces specific challenges derived from persistent digital divides, structural inequalities in access to advanced technologies, media concentration, institutional weakness in the regulation of digital platforms, and political contexts marked by polarization and systematic disinformation.

This space for dialogue brings together researchers, university educators, journalists, digital communicators, and educational technology professionals with the aim of analyzing empirical experiences, real cases, innovative projects, and concrete dilemmas related to the use of multimedia, transmedia, and immersive narratives, where algorithmic mediation directly influences professional and pedagogical decision-making.

Thematic Axes:

  • Structural transformations in Latin American journalism and emerging narratives
  • Fundamental ethical dilemmas at the intersection of AI and journalism
  • Generative AI in social sciences education: transformative possibilities
  • Specific potentials of AI in journalism and communication training
  • Structural limitations and critical risks of AI use in Latin American education
  • Regulatory frameworks, deontological updating, and regional foresight
