Abstract

This workshop seeks to generate critical discussion and provide insights into contemporary digital and political communication through an in-depth analysis of the current platformized landscape.

This working panel is conceived as a space for academic reflection on the ongoing transformations of journalism and political communication in a digitalized environment. The platformization of public life, understood as the centrality of digital intermediaries in society (Nieborg et al., 2022), has clear effects on communication. This leads to a redefinition of the strategies used by media, political actors, and citizens, while a new model of an illiberal public sphere based on polarization develops (Bennett & Kneuer, 2023).

In this context, the workshop addresses the configuration of a new communicative ecosystem. This includes diverse issues such as platform and algorithmic logics, the role of journalism in the face of disinformation, the functioning of the public sphere, and the use of scientific methods for its study, among others. It also discusses the possibilities that this platformized scenario opens up for participation and democratic quality.

The proposal offers a multidisciplinary approach that brings together perspectives from the social sciences, such as communication studies and political science, as well as approaches from data mining. The aim is to promote dialogue among researchers in the field that can contribute to a better understanding of the digital communicative ecosystem, with implications for professional practice. In addition, it seeks to explore analytical tools for the theoretical and empirical study of the behavior of audiences and political and media actors.
