Under the title “The Application of Artificial Intelligence in Political Communication: Misinformation, Polarization and Emotions”, the journal Social Sciences & Humanities Open (Scopus, Q1) will publish this special issue

Year after year, the International Conference on Communication and Applied Technologies – ICOMTA organizes editorial initiatives to promote the dissemination of key findings presented during the event. This year’s edition will be held in a hybrid format—both in-person and online—at the Austral University of Chile from September 2 to 4. These editorial projects aim to extend the impact of discussions that take place during ICOMTA’s traditional three-day event each September.
In its fifth edition, ICOMTA will feature a special issue focused on one of this year’s central topics, to be published in the highly regarded journal Social Sciences & Humanities Open (Scopus, Q1). The issue is titled “The Application of Artificial Intelligence in Political Communication: Misinformation, Polarization and Emotions”, and is edited by Paulo Carlos López-López and Erika Jaráiz Gulías (University of Santiago de Compostela), Daniel Barredo (University of Málaga), and Luis Cárcamo Ulloa (Austral University of Chile).
“With this issue, we aim to analyze various electoral contexts in which Artificial Intelligence has been applied, especially to understand its harmful effects”, says Paulo Carlos López, lead editor of the special issue and President of ICOMTA’s Honorary Committee. “There are many challenges that come from the automation of political discourse, such as polarization and misinformation, to name a few,” López adds.
The article selection process for this special issue is straightforward:
- Interested authors must first submit an abstract (without full paper) to ICOMTA by July 20, 2025.
- After a peer review focused on overall quality, the editorial committee of the special issue will select the most relevant submissions.
👉 Click here to view the topics associated with the special issue - Editors will then notify authors whether or not their abstract has been accepted.
- Authors whose abstracts are selected will receive detailed instructions for submitting the full paper. The deadline for full submission is September 30, 2025.
“Following that critical first step—the initial selection—the full article will undergo a second round of evaluation, in line with the editorial protocol established by Social Sciences & Humanities Open,” explains Daniel Barredo, Chair of the Organizing Committee and co-editor of the issue. “It’s going to be very competitive, as we aim to publish the articles that represent the most significant theoretical and practical advances on the topic,” he adds.
