- The Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL), the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE), and UNESCO invite proposals for their workshop to participate in the 5th International Conference on Communication and Applied Technologies – ICOMTA 2025

In a connected and dynamic world, media and information literacy (MIL) is an essential skill for understanding, analyzing, and critically engaging with the flows of information that shape our societies. This is the focus of Workshop 1, which will be held at ICOMTA 2025, a joint effort organized by UNESCO, the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL), and the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE). The aim is to propose a practical and reflective approach, exploring how MIL becomes a central element in connecting communication, educational innovation, and the ethical use of technology.
«Media and information literacy is a necessity in the digital age. It is crucial that society develops critical thinking to identify reliable information and avoid media manipulation,» says Andrea Velásquez from UTPL, academic coordinator of the workshop. She explains that MIL should be considered a public policy in education, as it enables individuals to participate in democratic life, access continuous learning opportunities, and understand the impacts of digitalization on their daily lives.
Verónica Yépez Reyes from PUCE, also an academic coordinator of the workshop, mentions that this workshop provides an ideal space for academic discussion and dialogue on the questions and ways to address the challenges and opportunities that digitalization presents, both in general and in the academic field in particular.
Daniel Barredo Ibáñez, from the University of Málaga and President of the ICOMTA International Scientific Committee, states that the event organizers are excited to have this specific conversation about solutions to challenges such as disinformation, the influence of artificial intelligence, and issues of inclusion and sustainability in learning.
“We believe that, due to its academic potential and the relevance of the organizing institutions, this workshop will result in a specific book on the topic, based on the most important papers presented,” says Paulo Carlos López from the University of Santiago de Compostela and President of the Honorary Committee of ICOMTA 2025.
